Pet hair removal takes patience, skill, and practice and should always be done by a groomer. It isn't necessary for the owner to be present when their dog has a haircut but it's recommended that you discuss the type of cut you'd like your dog to have at the first appointment. Dogs have different types of coats, depending on their breed. Smooth coat dogs don't have to be groomed as frequently as some other breeds. A dog with a double coat may have short or long hair. Curly coated dogs often get a puppy or show clip and need more frequent trims. A wire coat or broken coat is common on Airedales and Irish wolfhounds. These dogs require frequent trims to keep the coat from getting matted. Yorkies and Maltese are examples of dogs with long coats that require more care than some short hair breeds.
